Morning Glories Vol 1

Just finished this trade today.

I got this as a Christmas present. Thanks Dave!

I different sort of comic to my usual, more like Buffy and Dollhouse than anything else. I enjoyed it well enough so that I will order Vol 2 when I next do an internet order next week.

Next up. A Robin Hobb novel. It'll probably take me 2-3 weeks to read that.

Spider-man Human Torch by Dan Slott

This was a great mini series.

I bought the hardback collection after reading the "Greatest Dan Slott Stories ever told" on CBR and being amazed I'd never heard of this series, let alone read it and it was No. 1 on the list.

Great stuff.

Next up: Morning Glories

Cerebus Church and State ends

I've now finished re-reading my Cerebus run to the end of Church and State (issue 113). And to be honest, from such promising beginnings it was such a let down.

Book 5 - Astoria which ran to issue 104 was good, thought provoking and controversial but I suspect that Dave Sim's eye was already off the ball as regards to the plot as the money he was clearly making from the comic and High Society reprints as well as his status as a maverik publisher were clearly distracting him. There are so many glaring plot holes that you have to just try and sit back and enjoy the fantastic art and the episodes of humour.

Unfortunately when Cerebus "Assends" and arrives on the moon there is not even those aspects to enjoy.

So, a disappointment after such a clever and enjoyable run of comics.

Cerebus Link

As I am re-reading Cerebus I thought it would be a good a good idea to post this link to the Comic Book Resources article that prompted me to get round to re-reading.

It was a good read and my hat goes off to anyone who can read 300 comics of any title in one month!

My first Cerebus

Cerebus #92 was the first issue of Cerebus I ever bought. It was from a cheap back-issue bin from Nostalgia and Comics Birmingham. Even though it was towards the end of a major storyline - I was hooked. I lapped up as much of the back issues as I could (or phonebook reprints or Swords of Cerebus to be precise). It also inspired me to write and draw my own comic although "The ACEs" is nothing like it really.

What a shame and a disappointment that actually it was about to change tone and direction and not be half as entertaining. My re-reading will not continue beyond the end of Church and State.

The Rolling Stones in Cerebus

Still reading Cerebus. Just an issue a night recently as I've been watching Spartacus: Vengeance, Fringe Season 1 and re-watching Game of Thrones reading for season 2 in April.

These two issues feature Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Sim does them well.

Exciting New Purchases

I am really excited about these purchases - all of which arrived today.

The Marvel Firsts 1970s Vol 1 contains quite a few first appearances of teams or characters that I've not got the orginal comics for. Such as Werewolf By Night, Luke Cage, The Defenders or Ghost Rider. There are one or two I already had but for £13.50 for a well put-together package this is great value!

Whilst the above is of historical interest (particularly for me as it's Bronze Age) the two Brubaker books will probably be more enjoyable reads. The Catwoman collection (again £13.50) reprints some critically acclaimed early DC work and the Criminal Editions so far have been great so I am expecting more of the same with Volume 6.

Now these are added to the reading list but it may be sometime before I read them all.
